In times long past, swords and those who wielded them were held in very high esteem. Often, the swords would receive blessings to ensure victory to their bearer. It was believed the blades would lose their blessings if left pointing toward the ground for too long, and so were mounted pointing skyward. In more recent times, the belief has fallen out of favor. However, the historically important swords are still displayed in the traditional way.
